Taiping Life Insurance Co., Ltd. is one of the oldest insurance companies in China. It was originally founded in 1929 and sponsored by Kincheng Banking Corp., the most important private bank at the time in Old China. Establishing more than 990 branches throughout China and Southeast Asia, Taiping achieved tremendous growth and became one of the largest insurance corporations in China until the domestic insurance sector was nationalized in 1949. In 2001, Taiping resumed its business in mainland China with approval from both the State Council of the People’s Republic of China and the China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC).

Headquartered in Shanghai, Taiping Life was one of the first companies to be granted a nationwide license to write group insurance in Mainland China. Taiping Life is also considered one of the fastest growing life insurance companies in China.

Taiping Life is a joint-venture between three organizations: China Insurance (Holdings) Company Ltd. and China Insurance International Holding Company Ltd., both headquartered in Hong Kong, and Fortis, one of the founding members of the International Group Program. Fortis represents IGP in the Benelux countries where it is one of the leading providers of financial services to individuals, companies and the public sector. Fortis is one of the 20 largest financial institutions in Europe and is listed on Fortune magazine’s Global 500, a ranking of the world’s largest companies based on annual revenues.

In 2003, Taiping Life was given a credit rating of BBB+ by Fitch International. This is the highest credit rating awarded according to international standards to an insurance company in China.
